“Luck of the Irish” is a phrase commonly used to describe an ability to find success despite facing challenges and this certainly applies to four-year-old mare “Think I’m Irish” in recording her Maiden win at Seymour on Tuesday. Stepping out for the first time this preparation the So You Think mare settled in a nice mid field position under jockey Cory Parish in the Seymour Equine Clinic Maiden Plate over 1300m. As the field entered the home straight the leader kicked clear to space the rest of the field by a four length margin and the race looked all over. However Think I’m Irish knuckled down to the task and gradually wore down the leader to score right on the line to defeat the odds on favourite, Cologne by 0.2L with a further length margin to third placegetter, Dont Say No Mikki.
Think I’m Irish began her early education in New Zealand after being purchased from the Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale in 2022. Given time to mature the well bred mare trialled up nicely last year and connections decided to export her to Australian to commence her racing career. Unlucky not to win in her debut race for the Hope Team and with a few more educational races under her belt it was decided to give her a spell and prepare for a Winter campaign where she has an affinity on the wet tracks.
Continuing with the Irish connection our very own Irish ex-pat Dee (Deirdre) Hope was on strapping duties and pictured with the mare after the race. Think I’m Irish races in the colours of owner, Chrisitne Shaw-Boyd depicting her Scottish heritage with a green thistle.
